Not so delightful spring
The number of hay fever sufferers is on the increase: compared to about nine million individuals 20 years ago, about 17 million people in Germany are now affected. According to the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF), about 15 to 25 percent of people suffer from allergic rhinitis. Many of them are expected to suffer badly this spring, as the experts are generally predicting a very high pollen count in 2009. Birch pollen are especially bad: every other year, birch has a “bumper” year with a high pollen count and this is exactly the case this year. However, because of the cold winter it started later – at the beginning of March instead of the middle of February. Pollen-allergy sufferers will therefore be faced with a real invasion of pollen from early-flowering trees such as birch, alder and hazel. Another particularly aggressive allergen – the pollen of the ragweed plant – is spreading across Europe like wildfire.
Ragweed: the allergy-sufferer’s nightmare
Ragweed pollen is one of the most aggressive allergy triggers. “It is especially small, highly aggressive and can lead to severe hay fever-like symptoms and even asthma,” explains Wiesbaden-based allergologist Professor Ludger Klimek from the Ärzteverband Deutscher Allergologen (ÄDA – Association of German Allergologists). In Australia, this has earned it the name of “asthma plant”. A single plant can release a billion pollen grains, with a concentration of just six grains per cubic centimeter of air being sufficient to cause allergic symptoms. A previously little-known fact, according to the German Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, is that ragweed can be contained as an accidental contaminant in bird food. Contaminated bird food is currently the main way in which the plant spreads. When buying bird food, therefore, you should make sure that the labeling states that the feed is contaminant-free. It should also be borne in mind that ragweed flowers from August until the first frosts in November, thus extending the period of suffering for people with hay fever allergies.
Relief for pollen allergy sufferers
Allergy sufferers should try to avoid contact with pollen. A pollen filter in the car, a shower before going to bed and keeping clothing worn during the day out of the bedroom can all help to alleviate symptoms such as violent sneezing fits, a runny nose or inflammation of the connective tissue of the eyes.
A sea water nasal spray containing dexpanthenol, such as Bepanthen, can help to delay the onset of hay fever. The spray rinses dust and pollen from the nasal mucosa, thereby ensuring a lower pollen concentration in the nose. It also contains dexpanthenol and natural sea water to moisten and cleanse the nose, thus ensuring optimal care of the nasal mucosa. If the nose is already painful, Bepanthen eye and nasal ointment can help. It also contains the active substance dexpanthenol, which promotes wound healing and regenerates nasal mucosa cells, thereby restoring the function of the nasal mucosa. The ointment is also suitable for the treatment of connective tissue irritations which often occur with hay fever.
Both products are free from colorings, fragrances and preservatives and are therefore also suitable for sensitive individuals, babies and small children.
The burden of cross-allergies
About 70 percent of pollen allergy sufferers also develop a pollen-associated food allergy, known as a cross-allergy. Individuals who are allergic to early flowering plants such as birch pollen are particular badly affected, often also reacting to apples, strawberries, hazelnuts, carrots, celery and soy products. The reason for this is the similarity of the allergy-triggering pollen proteins and the proteins from various foods, which the body is unable to distinguish from one other and tries to combat equally. Whilst in mild forms it can develop into sneezing and a runny nose, patients with a birch pollen allergy will experience an unpleasant tingling and stinging in the lips, gums and throat when they bite into an apple. In the worst cases, this can lead to difficult breathing, circulatory collapse and unconsciousness.

Warning Signs of Diabetes
Diabetes is a potentially life threatening health issue. If you suspect you may be experiencing it or be in danger of acquiring it, you must understand more on the subject of the reasons for this disease and how to recognize diabetes symptoms.
Diabetes is a illness wherein sugar, or glucose, accumulates in the bloodstream. This occurs because the cells in your pancreas cease manufacturing satisfactory amounts of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that’s critical for breaking down sugar in your blood. In the case of this syndrome, however, the quantity of insulin created is inadequate or is utilized improperly by your system. This causes your blood glucose levels to become raised – at times to the point of threat.
There is more than one kind of this disease. Type 1, also called juvenile diabetes, will usually materialize in childhood or the teenage years and strikes with no notice.
